CAVES
BALANKANCHE
These caves, five kilometers from
Chichen Itza, were uncovered in 1959 after being sealed for eight centuries.
With the passing of time, stalagtites and stalagmites formed an imposing column
much like an altar, and offerings were made to the god of water. Religious
characteristics of the underground world of the maya are preserved on the walls
in passageways of this ancient temple.
DZITNUP
A beautiful cenote (natural well)
located along the Chichen Itza-Valladolid highway. It was an important source of
water for human consumption. Easily accessible, it is now used for public
bathing, and handcrafs are sold here. Its deep blue waters invite us to swim and
rest.
LOLTUN
This cave, known as "flower of
stone" in Mayan, is a testimony of the antiquity of the Maya, since ancient
stone tools found inside have been dated between 9,000 and 3,000 B.C. More that
140 paintings have been recorded in its various well-lighted chambers and
corridors which run more than a kilometer underground. It is located 121
kilometers from Mérida. .
